I’m an avid fan of food in night markets, not just because of their extremely affordable prices. Most of them just tastes so good. Those crunchy fragrant chicken cutlets in Taiwan, soft fluffy tofu donuts in Japan and ingredient filled duck kway chap in Penang are just some of my favorites from night markets located in different parts of the globe. When I heard that there’s a daily night market in Langkawi, I knew I just had to visit.

Spoilers ahead on why you may want to give night markets in Langkawi a miss.
We arrived on a Thursday night and was fortunate that the Thursday Langkawi Night Market was near the Cenang Beach, where I was staying on. We took a Grabcar down. When we arrived at the destination, a wave of disappointment swept over me. There were only a handful of vendors present and the area. Spoilt by the huge variety of food and large spaces of night markets from other countries, the handful of vendors that were present was underwhelming. The areas they occupied were small, and of course, variety was limited.
With a rumbling tummy, I dived straight into the food, starting with the Malaysian fish sticks (1RM for 4) and grilled chicken drumstick (5RM). There were also other dishes like fried kway teow and nasi lemak.
Unfortunately, I ran out of food options quickly and had to trace back my steps just to fill my stomach. The long wait for my chicken cheese murtabak was also slightly disappointing as the crust was not crispy… (Is murtabak supposed to be all soggy?)
Mango sticky rice was not worth the calories – the rice was tough and felt a little uncooked, the coconut cream very watery and diluted. Let’s not get started on the Ramly burger. The meat patty was so thin that it was probably only one-third the patty I can get from our local night markets. It was as disappointing as it could get.
In my honest opinion, this night market experience was time wasting and I strongly discourage travellers to visit the Thursday night market. Langkawi is situated along the coasts and indulging in Langkawi seafood will definitely be a tastier and worthy experience. We’ve tried a couple of seafood restaurants in Langkawi – the seafood was fresh and price reasonable 😉
